An adjustable dumbbell replaces a ladder of fixed pairs with one handle, which is why it is usually the first weight bought for a spare room. Three formats sit on this page and they are not variations on one product: selectorised handles, round adjustable pairs and spinlock kits that convert into a barbell.
How the three formats differ
A selectorised handle sits in a cradle and you pick the load with a quick-change selector, so the weight changes at the handle rather than by moving plates. A round adjustable pair uses a twist handle to lift the weight out of its cradle, with a circular head rather than a hexagonal one. A spinlock kit is threaded handles, loose plates and collars, so you change the load by hand, and joining the two handles with the connector bar turns the pair into a barbell. Of the three, only the convertible kits also make a barbell.
Where each format stops
The 15-in-1 selector covers fifteen settings to 24 kg per dumbbell and is supplied as a pair, with or without its rack. The 17-in-1 covers seventeen settings to 40 kg per dumbbell and is supplied as a pair too, 80 kg in the box. It is also the longer of the two, which changes how the bottom of a deep fly feels and narrows close-grip work a little. Round adjustable pairs are supplied as matched pairs at 24, 32, 40 and 45 kg, each in a 2 kg or a 4 kg increment version. Convertible kits are listed by the total weight of the kit, plates, handles and connector together, rather than by the weight per hand, and they run from a 20 kg set through 25 kg and 30 kg to a 65 kg set, with cast iron sets at 20 kg and 30 kg as well.
What to check on a convertible kit
These are standard one-inch threaded handles, not Olympic two-inch sleeves, so the plates will not transfer to an Olympic bar or sit alongside bumper plates later. The connector bar is short next to a full barbell, which limits grip width on the bench press. Cast iron plates hold their marked weight and stack more tightly than vinyl-coated cement, so a cast iron kit gives more usable loading positions for the same total weight. The plates supplied with these kits are not sold separately here.
One adjustable pair or a rack of fixed pairs
