Adjustable Dumbbells
When 24kg stops being a challenge, most home lifters are stuck buying pair after pair of heavy fixed dumbbells. This 40kg adjustable dumbbell pair extends the useful life of two handles to seventeen settings each, covering everything from a light warm-up fly to a heavy incline press. It is supplied as a pair, two dumbbells, 80 kg in total.
Forty kilos per hand is a meaningful strength ceiling. For context, a lifter pressing a pair of 40kg dumbbells for repetitions is moving 80kg of free weight through an unstable, independently loaded path, which is a genuinely advanced dumbbell bench press. That headroom is why the 40kg pair is the version to buy if you have any intention of training seriously for more than a year.
The trade-off against the 24kg model is physical size and cost per pair. A 40kg selectorised bell is longer, which slightly narrows the range of motion available on close-grip work and makes the bottom of a deep dumbbell fly feel different. In exchange you never hit the wall that ends a 24kg dumbbell's usefulness, and you avoid buying a second set of heavy fixed bells later.
At this load the dumbbell stops being an accessory tool and becomes a primary one. Dumbbell bench press, single-arm rows, Bulgarian split squats, Romanian deadlifts and heavy shrugs all sit comfortably inside a 40kg-per-hand range. The independent loading also exposes and corrects left-right strength asymmetries that a barbell will happily hide, which is a real reason many coaches program dumbbell pressing alongside barbell work rather than instead of it.
Buy the 40kg if you currently press 22kg or more per hand for sets of eight, or if you are pairing dumbbells with a bench and rack for a complete home setup. Buy the 24kg Adjustable Dumbbell if space is very tight, budget is the deciding factor, or you are early in training. For loads above 40kg per hand, a plate-loaded approach using an Olympic barbell and weight plates becomes more economical than any selectorised dumbbell.
Is this one dumbbell or a pair?
A pair. Two dumbbells ship together, each adjustable to 40 kg, which is why the listing weighs 80 kg and why the price is pair money rather than the cost of a single bell.
Is 40kg per dumbbell realistic for home training?
Yes, and it is a level many trained lifters take years to reach on dumbbell bench press. It provides genuine long-term headroom rather than a number you outgrow.
Is it noticeably longer than the 24kg version?
It is, because the plates stack along the handle. This mainly affects very close-grip work and the deepest part of a dumbbell fly.
Can I use it for legs as well?
Certainly. Goblet squats, split squats and Romanian deadlifts all work well, though at some point loaded carries and squats will call for a barbell.
