Because a sled only ever moves under concentric effort, athletes can accumulate very large amounts of work with minimal recovery cost, which is why sled work is used in-season when heavy squatting would compromise performance.
The included sprint mat is what makes it usable indoors. Sleds are designed for turf or a rubberised track; dragged directly across a gym floor they will damage the surface and the runners. A dedicated 10m mat gives a consistent friction surface, protects the floor, and can be rolled away when the session ends.

Heavy sled pushes train acceleration mechanics and the same hip and knee extension used in sprinting, while lighter loads at speed train the mechanics themselves.
